Commentary: The important weeks...
By Håvard Lindheim, 6 August 2004, 10:08

When autumn closes in, we RBK supporters enter the most hectic and exciting time of year, writes rbkweb.com's Åsmund Sjøberg.

The next games will in many ways be decisive for how one will remember this season. Great, medium or rather poor? That ruthless is this game. Throughout a season, 50-60 matches are played, but the 4-5 next matches are crucial for the season as a whole.

Thankfully, we qualified for European cup play by knocking out FC Sheriff Tiraspol. But there is more to come. The "league finals" against Lillestrøm and Tromsø, the cup thriller against Lillestrøm at Åråsen and the two games against Maccabi Haifa are all vital for our beloved RBK.

"The next game is always the most important one," is an often recited phrase in the world of football. If this season is to be conceived as very good, this phrase must be followed. We are secured play in one of the two European cups, and that is a fine start indeed. Should we be knocked out by Maccabi Haifa we will at least get the UEFA cup, and that is acceptable. Still, what we all really want, is the Champion League hymn at Lerkendal this autumn...

The two league matches against LSK and Tromsø are important too. Perhaps the most important, if one in this busy period also gives some tought to the next season. Another gold in the Tippeliga will get us a new chance to play against Europe's finest next season. With victories in both games we get a better lead at the top of the table. And a lead isn't something RBK usually gives up during the autumn...

As for the cup match, the quarter final against LSK, it can be said that it's the least important. If I was to choose one to lose, this is it. Not that it isn't fun to win the cup, far from it; but we did that last year, and I feel that it is much more important for RBK to cement their position as the best team of both Norway and the Nordic countries, considering our early exit from the Champions League last year and others hoping RBK is on their way down from the throne. Another league gold and participation in Europe will confirm RBK's position in a much stronger way than a domestic cup gold.

I say please - thank you - let's take all three! But to win the league and to enter the Champions League is more important than winning the cup this year.

We have important and fun times ahead, comrades. Rejoyce! Let us believe that everything goes in the favour of RBK.

PS! In addition we will of course win the Royal League...
