Solli new central boss
By Håvard Lindheim, 17 March 2006, 08:14

Per-Mathias Høgmo has decided to return to the good old 4-3-3 formation. Jan Gunnar Solli will be the defensive midfield anchor.

As coach for Tromsø in 2004, Høgmo had great success with turning the midfield V, and this 4-2-3-1-formation was triend in Rosenbog last autumn. But after the two UEFA cup games against Zenit, this tactic was abandoned.

"We have played with Jan Gunnar as an anchor now, in the last three friendlies, and he has grown. He was great, especially in the two first games. Today the conditions were bad, so it wasn't easy to play ball on the centre midfield," Høgmo tells rosenborg.info after the 2-0 victory against Start.

Solli has on several occations been named as the new midfield general, without living up to it. Høgmo believes that it will come when he's given enough time.

"Jan Gunnar has what it takes. He has a good foot, a high radius of action, and he's fast. At the same time, he needs to be put in a simple role to achieve the confidence needed," the Rosenborg coach says.

This means that players like Per Ciljan Skjelbred, Ørjan Berg and Alexander Tettey all return to normal running midfielder positions, like the one Roar Strand has defined. The competition for a place on the midfield will, in other words, be tough indeed.

"We'll find ourselves in a situation with no crystal clear first 11, and that's good. But everyone must be very sure about their own roles," Per-Mathias Høgmo finishes.
