Rosenborg - Wigan 1-2
By Håvard Lindheim, 14 August 2006, 09:57
Several young, talented RBK players got a taste of the opposition given by an English Premier League side.
Jahmir Hyka and Abdoulrazack Traore both got their first team debut, while Andreas Nordvik, Aksel Skjølsvik and Michael Jamtfall all got a good amount of playing time in the second half.
Hyka and Traore represented something fresh on the midfield, and the last mentioned provoked a penalty in the final minutes, when being fouled by Arjan de Zeuuw. Karim Essediri did a safe score from the penalty spot.
Still, that goal was more or less the only highlight for RBK tonight. At that time, Rosenborg was already down 0-2, in spite of the fact that Knut Tørum sent a heavy starting 11 out: Apart from Lars Hirschfeld and Michael Dorsin, both resting, RBK sent out the team that most likely will start the important away match against Molde. Vidar Riseth, suspended for the Sunday's match, was therefore placed on the bench.
David Connolly sent Wigan in the lead after a mistake by Ståle Stensaas. After an evenly played first half, RBK started making substitutes. Among others, the named teenagers got their chances.
All the changes reduced the home team's cooperation, and the tempo dropped. At the same time, Rosenborg just didn't manage to produce chances. Instead of an equalizer, the Englishmen were allowed to double their lead, as Lee McCulloch put the ball in an empty net after a shot in the post by Connolly.
In all, a deserved win for the guests.
PS! Miika Koppinen had to go out with a nose injury. Luckily it doesn't seem to be a fracture.
