Boavista? Rosenborg played against Boavista in Champions League 1999/2000... (Where was Benfica I wonder???)

Group stage 1, group C
14/9 Boavista 0-3 Rosenborg
22/9 Rosenborg 2-2 Feyenoord
29/9 Rosenborg 2-2 Borussia Dortmund
19/10 Borussia Dortmund 0-3 Rosenborg
27/10 Rosenborg 2-0 Boavista
2/11 Feyenoord 1-0 Rosenborg

Final stand group stage 1:

Rosenborg 11
Feyenoord 8
Borussia Dortmund 6
Boavista 5

Rosenborg beat the crap out of both Boavista and Borussia Dortmund...!

well, Rosenborg has qualified for Champions League 8 years in a row... this is the first time in years we have to play UEFA-cup instead, since we failed to qualify against Deportivo La Coruna (0-0 home, 1-0 away)

anyway, i'm getting tired of this yip-yap... let's wait and see

The winner of the Norwegian League has to qualify for Champions League every year. (Rosenborg has been directly qualified only once: 1999/2000)

Rosenborg's opponents over the years: (Rosenborg through every year)

1995/1996 - Besiktas
1996/1997 - Panathinaikos
1997/1998 - MTK Budapest (easy...)
1998/1999 - Club Brügge
1999/2000 - directly qualified
2000/2001 - Shelbourne + Dunaferr (easy)
2001/2002 - Inter Bratislava (easy)
2002/2003 - Brøndby

2003/2004 - beaten by Deportivo La Coruna

...so now we have to play UEFA cup instead Sad

It actually is.

But in last week's UEFA European Club Forum in Barcelona, the topic was discussed. The smaller clubs (and countries) in Europe want to change the seeding system. Hopefully we (I write "we" since Rosenborg agree on this) can reduce the national coeffient part of the club coeffient from 50% to 25%. This way, clubs like Real Sociedad who haven't competeted in European cups for years, not longer will become higher ranked than teams like Rosenborg and Benfica just because of what Real Madrid, Valencia etc. have accieved in Champions League the last years.

I have studied Benfica's results in the European cups, and the statistics make me more optmistic in front of the game at Estadio da Luz on Thursday.

This is 5 of the last 16 Benfica games in Europe:

98/99 CL group phase:
HJK Helsinki - Benfica 2-0
Benfica - HJK Helsinki 2-2

99/00 UEFA Cup 3rd round:
Celta Vigo - Benfica 7-0

00/01 UEFA Cup 3rd round:
Halmstad - Benfica 2-1
Benfica - Halmstad 2-2

In other words: 1/3 of the last appearances on the European stage, have ended in disaster for Benfica.

...and; Yes, I fully understand that this is just old stats, and the game on Thursday is "a world of itselves". But I like what I see! Smile

I can't really fault Benfica for losing to Celta de Vigo, though... Celta is a top quality team, as witnessed in last night's match against Arsenal. It was only some excellent but desperate defending from Arsenal's side that saved them on many occasions.

Apart from that, I have no doubt that with a halfway decent result tomorrow night, Rosenborg can crush Benfica at home.

Bring your thickest wollen sweaters, Senhores... you're going to the icebox. Hell is a small town just north of Trondheim and it's already frozen over! Twisted Evil

I see porto had it's way with manchester united. Congats to porto. I'd rather see a portugese team win than an english team any day.

I've also heard that if Benfica plays at 75% of that level, it will be an iteresting day for the RBK defense. (but we're a better team than the overrated reds Very Happy )

Here's what I think will happen: Benfica will have tons of ball posession, their supporters will think that Benfica is the better team, has all the play, but will get frustrated by the tough, physical defense of RBK. A couple of clear scoring chances will be miraculously saved by Espen Johnsen. Then, in a counter-attack, RBK will score 'against the flow of play' (in the supporters' eyes), and Benfica will blame a defender for not doing his job. You'll yell at the referee, the coach and the substitutions. and in the end, I think the result will be 1-1.

I think that it will be exacttly as you said. Good analysis. Very Happy

I was rather impressed by Porto last night, even if ManU have shown some
rather bad defencive play lately.
Hope Benfica don't play quite as well...

Let's hope that this will be a great match, and that Benfica win Very Happy 2 or 3 0 Very Happy

Of course I hope RBK wins tonight.. But I can settle with a tie or a "One-goal" loose.. (I hope they score too..)

But I'm mostly looking forward to the game in Trondheim... The cold north!! Very Happy

A charter plane from Trondheim came to Lisboa yesterday. Therefore I expect that around 100 Rosenborg supporters will be at Estadio da Luz tonight.

Now it's just 6 hours till kick off. I really look forward to the game. As you Benfica fans might know, Rosenborg hasn't play a "real" match since the UEFA Cup game against Red Star Belgrade in November, and now I am HUNGRY for some football! Smile

oh,oh

Not long before kickoff...

This is going to be a great match between two good teams...

I expect a close game with a score somethink around 1-1,

and then RBK wins 3-1 at home!!!

RBK FOR EVER!

one hour too go!

Well...i guess you all have to admit that the result is short for the exhibition of Benfica...specially in the second half... well: in the first half, we entered very well in the game, with high pressure and a good ball possession. The game was controled for like 20 minutes. After that, Rosenborg woke up a bit, and started playing a bit more freely, since benfica pressure frozen quite a bit, and that equilibrated the match. Geovanni was certainly the worst player on the pitch, and on the second half, the prodigious kid João Pereira (47) came for his place, and made Benfica´s attack a lot more quicker and started to destroy Rosenborgs defensive structure. We had dozens of oportunities to kill the match, but unfortunatly, Nuno Gomes and Simão werent at their best on what shooting concerns to. Great goal from Zahovic, and if we play as we did tonight in the next hand, we will certainly pass.
I predict 1-1 in Trondheim

What you Benfica fans don't know is that Rosenborg are a MUTCH better home team than they are away. In Europe we have often lost big away and won big at home. This time we actually have a pretty good away result.
I think most Rosenborg supporters feel quite optimistic about advancing in the UEFA cup now.
(To be honest I had in advance feared a big loss, since we are in the winter break and all, so 1-0 was OK and we even produced some big chances).

if you think Benfica is playing in defence wednesday ...yer pretty wrong Wink as i said, Benfica plays better away from home because there is no pressure from the supporters that want many goals. And we do score many many goals away lol...so... dont be so confident that you can win 2-0... we always score one or more Smile

If you play offensive on Lerkendal, you will regret, our counter-attacks will send you back to the airport in HELL, with frowns all over the place Laughing
