The Chronicle can reveal that Norway international Steffen Iversen also offered his service to [Newcastle] United.

The ex-Tottenham Hotspur striker, who played at White Hart Lane during Hughton’s long tenure as coach and won the League Cup in 1999, is available at a knockdown £200,000 fee from Rosenberg, where he has blasted in 49 goals in 98 appearances during his second spell with the Tippeligaen side.

However, Hughton said: “There’s a connection there, I know him and he is a friend from my time at Spurs.

“But this is one we won’t be looking into any further.”

Steffen, due to his previous injuries, probably won't have that many seasons/chances left for top level football so it's unsurprising he's looking elsewhere.

If he stays with us, it might be useful to use him more sparingly if his fitness doesn't allow 90 minutes each week.

My guess is that he stays until December, and then goes for free to an English club on a Bosman transfer.

(He would rather be interested in playing in the Champions League once more.)

CRYSTAL PALACE are hoping to tie up a deal for former Tottenham Hotspur centre forward Steffen Iversen in time for their Bank Holiday Monday clash with Preston.

Iversen has been playing for Rosenborg since 2006 but is a free agent after his contract expired at the end of the Norwegian season last month.

(...)

And the Advertiser understands that Eagles manager George Burley has identified him as the man to fire Palace clear of danger.

(...)

Burley wouldn't be drawn on names but did admit that he was already deep in talks with a centre forward and hoped he would be ready to face Championship basement boys Preston on Monday.

"We are speaking to a striker and hopefully we'll get an agreement tied up soon," he said.

"He's a player currently out of contract and we are aiming to get him here for the game on January 3."

Crystal Palace just sacked their manager. Will the deal still go through?

According to Iversen himself and his agent, the deal was signed prior to the sacking of George Burley. From the look of it, nothing is changed.

Goodluck to Iversen, he's done well for RBK in his various spells. Not sure he was that effective last year and the Championship is a tough league.

"Steffen was George's idea. We have been tracking his situation since the summer," said Parish.

"The entire current management team think he is a decent addition to the squad. It's also very low risk and isn't instead of anything else we might do."

Err..thoughts? Will be good for the younger players and will score some goals hopefully. Can't see him playing every week though.

Not exactly a man for the future no. My main concern is his ability to stay fit and at the same time stay injury free. His antics will bring some well needed positive spirit into the squad though, and he has the ability to take the edge of things. But I'm uncertain of how he will preform on the pitch over a whole season. My guess is that he'll score between 10-15 goals all competitions included. If so we should be more than happy.

Agree. And I'd imagine he wants to learn coaching now, what better place to start?

Can't see him as a coach. He'll move back to his family the day after he retires.

Iversen is interested in becoming a coach when his career is over.

If he had wished, he could have continued in the London club. As part of the coaching team in the Championship club.

- It is true that I was offered a coaching job, but it was not the right timing. I'm thinking to coaching after a while, but I'm not ready to give up playing career just yet, says Iversen.

He becoming a top division head coach will still be a big surprise for me.

Indeed, but there have been some strange coaches in the past (and present) too. Gazza is one example.

Edit: typo
