Captain Fantastic deserves his own thread!

He has been playing very well on the right back the last matches, even though this really isn't his favourite position. But as always he is sacrificing himself for the club. Tommel'n opp!

Therefore this is good news: Strand gets renewed contract

By the way, watch this: A tribute to Roar Strand

Strand is a hero. Apart from a very few, which other professional players stay true to their first love?? This new deal is great news!

Indeed!

Roar Strand and Erik Hoftun where the players who lifted RBK at a very high level. Now Hoftun is gone is still a great influence of Strand there. The team learns much from him and like Gerrit say's a real pro!

He's adapted well to the midfield position and is still capable of a goal or two. You need experienced players too and none more so than in this current younger RBK team.

Yet another season for Strand

I have to admitted that I am very surprised over his good season ending, and fear 2008 will be kind of an anti-climax...

I disagree. I haven't seen any signs of him "slowing down" yet.

Maybe it´ll be a kind of anti-climax in 2008. But if he wants to end his career in style, he has to play CL-season in 2009 an then ending! Cool

BTW, how many CL-matches has Roar? In the german "Kicker Champions-League magazine" he is named with 95 matches (before this years group-stage). The match in Germany would be nr. 100 if it is true!

Maybe they made a mistake and ment 95 EC-matches in general, what would be UEFA-cup and CL and the qualifiers, too.
These 69 matches are just CL-group-stages (and K.O.-round) or also qualifying-matches?!
And thanks for the answer!
There is no possibility to find a list of RBK-players with the most CL or EC-matches of all time?

He has got 113 UEFA club competition matches in total. Yes, it might be 95 CL matches including the qualifying matches.

Appearances: UEFA club competition
168 Paolo Maldini (AC Milan)
139 Luís Figo (Sporting, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid CF, FC Internazionale Milano)
134 Oliver Kahn (Karslruher SC, FC Bayern München)
130 Frank de Boer (AFC Ajax, FC Barcelona, Galatasaray SK)128 Clarence Seedorf (AFC Ajax, UC Sampdoria, Real
Madrid CF, FC Internazionale Milano, AC Milan)
127 Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (FC Bayern München, FC Internazionale Milano, Servette FC)
122 Roberto Carlos (FC Internazionale Milano, Real Madrid CF, Fenerbahçe SK)
122 Zinédine Zidane (AS Cannes, FC Girondins de Bordeaux, Juventus, Real Madrid CF)
121 Alessandro Costacurta (AC Milan)
121 Phillip Cocu (SBV Vitesse, PSV Eindhoven, FC Barcelona)

He's close with 113.

I think it is good news that he extends his contract. An experienced player in the selection is important, the younger players can learn a lot from him. And looking at his latest games, I think he's still got "it" and has no reason to retire already.

Strand played his 600th Rosenborg match against Odd.

League: 386
Cup: 75
Euro cups: 126
Royal League: 13

In addition he played 22 league games for Molde in 1993.

(...)

That figure is unlikely to increase greatly as the Trondheim native has long signalled his intent to call time on his career at the end of the season.

"I've had an eventful career, but I feel that the legs are getting a little slower," he explained.

"Earlier I had a few doubts about whether I was going to hang up my boots – now I am 100 per cent certain."

I echo Riseth's call for a Strand statue at Lerkendal. The likelihood should he decide to coach is that he will one day be head coach, which would further his legend status.

My favourite Strand moment has to be the goal against Arsenal, one of the best goal's I've ever seen from any team. Great passing, great finish. I guess he's the last of the 'old guard' and thus I think it's fair to say RBK are entering a new era in both on the field and off it.

He has scored in 7 diffirent seasons in the UEFA Champions League, and 9 if you count in qualification matches. That's a stunning achievement and Norwegian record (?) as well as having 11 goals in the tournament (plus two qualification goals)

Here are some examples from the world game that makes the CNN list of one-club heroes:

Paulo Maldini -- The Italian international defender has played 601 times for AC Milan in the league alone -- in a career spanning 25 years with one club, still playing into his 40th year.

Raul Gonzalez -- The Real Madrid captain has scored over 190 goals in close to 500 games in 14 seasons in La Liga, numbers that don't just highlight his tremendous talent, but also establish him as one of the best Spanish players ever to play the game.

Pele -- The football legend played for Santos between 1956-1974 -- making 659 appearances and scoring an incredible 643 goals not to mention his World Cup heroics for Brazil.

Lev Yashin -- Voted FIFA's goalkeeper of the century in 2000, Russia's Yashin spent his entire 22-year-old career with Dinamo Moscow, playing 812 for club and country.

Roar Strand -- Hard-working midfielder has won more domestic trophies than any current player in Europe with 14 league championsips and five cups for his Norwegian side Rosenborg. Like Scholes he recently made his 600th appearance for the Trondheim outfit.

New contract Smile

When Rosenborg legend Roar Strand scored against Odd earlier this season, he had managed to score in the top division in Norway 20 years in a row. Is this a record?" wondered Lars Tangstad last week.

This weekend Ryan Giggs equalled Strand's epic achievement. The Welshman's first league goal came in the Manchester derby back in May of the 1990-91 season and his free-kick against Spurs on Saturday evening means he has scored in 20 consecutive seasons in the top-flight. Paul Scholes, by way of comparison (and yet to score this season) has found the net in a mere 15 back-to-back seasons.

Of the one-club men, Giggs and Strand seem to be the pacesetters, but a fair few can better or match their achievements with multiple clubs. Paul Lovatt suggests Roberto Dinamite of Vasco da Gama who "scored 186 goals in 20 championships contended for for Vasco da Gama, from Rio de Janeiro, and one for Portuguesa, of São Paulo" between 1971 and 1990, according to this slightly awkwardly translated site.

And Paul Haynes is keen to dampen Giggs' and Strand's celebrations. "It is certainly not a record," he sternly begins. "Romário, for example, scored every season from 1985-2007 (23 overlapping seasons) and Pelé scored in every season 1957-1977 (21 seasons) while Puskás scored in the 22 seasons he played football (though he was banned from football for two years during this period)."

Incredible really, maybe doesn't reflect well on the league that Roar can still be comfortable...but then again, he is a bit of a one off.

He's just one of the really few remaining of the real profesional footballers -

Maldini, Costacourta, Sheringham, Strand, Romario (maybe) - can anybody remember anymore like them?

Yeah, I tought about him, but I feel that he actually, at the age of 35, still is a bit to young to make it to the list.

Last Saturday, Strand – who save for a 1993 loan to Molde FK has remained with Rosenborg – returned from injury to strike four minutes from time against Sandefjord Fotball. Not only did it move unbeaten Rosenborg three points clear at the Norwegian Premier Division summit, but it made the midfielder the only player to score in 21 [it is 22!] consecutive seasons of any European top flight, putting him back one ahead of Ryan Giggs.

"I don't think about these sort of things right now but in the future, then I will," Strand told UEFA.com.

"I've been lucky to be with a really good team for so many years, I've been happy to be there for that many years. I've been lucky to have so few injuries."

No doubt: This is Strand's final season

Looking forward to scenes like these after the Leverkusen game.
