Stevie May:

"Starting the campaign with another Europa League tie away from home is a bit special. The lads have done really well over the last two seasons to get us into Europe and this is the reward. It will be tough but hopefully if we can get right in their faces we can upset them and get through to the next round."

Wright has watched Rosenborg twice and has assembled a mass of footage of a team topping the domestic table after a 3-2 weekend home win over Odd.

“We’ve seen signs that they are a really good side but they’ve struggled at times in terms of performance, if not in terms of results,” said Wright

“I think they’ve got a lot of quality, particularly in midfield and up front. They are a very attack-minded side but, in the games and footage I’ve seen, teams have created chances against them.

“So we know it’s going to be tough but there’s enough to give us confidence that we can cause them problems as well.”

Wright (...) has pinpointed Nigerian attacker John Chibuike as a threat to the Perth side’s prospects of progressing.

“He’s been pushed through the middle,” said the Saints manager. “He’s hit a good run of form and he’s someone we’ve got to look out for.”

A very informative article about Trondheim though. Tommel'n opp!

Maybe the coast from Lindesnes to Halden and from North Cape to Kirkenes is the East coast?

The obvious lacking ingredient has been stability. Since Eggen left, Rosenborg have had nine different coaches, culminating in Per Joar Hansen, who helped the national under-21 side reach this year's European Championship in Israel before leaving to return to a post he departed in 2005.

His side have been largely convincing during the first half of the season and are undefeated in all competitions since April, overtaking league leaders Stromsgodset last weekend to reclaim top spot in Tippeligaen.

There is a lot of potential in his Rosenborg side but they are not yet close to fulfilling it. A blend of internationalists and a range of very exciting Norwegian youngsters give them a depth and quality that should be too much for St Johnstone.

HE starred for Northern Ireland when they held European champions Germany in 1996.

But Tommy Wright insists that leading St Johnstone to a win over Rosenborg would be the BIGGEST triumph of his career.

The Saints boss has been plotting how to overcome the Norwegians and believes his side have a chance of exploiting their dodgy defence.

(...)

“They play a more British-style game than the team last year, Eskisehirspor. They’re a talented group of players but they don’t have the same flair players as the guys from Turkey.

“The pressure is all on Rosenborg. They’ve said they must qualify for the Europa League.”

The catalogue of first-hurdle falls by Scottish clubs over the past three years has been horrendous. Dundee United (three times), Hearts (twice), Motherwell (twice), Aberdeen, Falkirk, Hibernian, Queen of the South and St Johnstone themselves – against Turkish side Eskisehirspor last year – have been knocked out by opponents of varying strength. All of it has given Scotland's co-efficient a terrible battering. St Johnstone, Hibs and Motherwell are all in the Europa League again this season, but for how long? "We're not going into the game worrying about Scotland's co-efficient, we're going into it worrying about getting a result," said Wright. "But I can't do anything else but think about it!

Wright called on his team to be ruthless in front of goal and disciplined at the back as he is convinced they will create chances against Rosenborg, who beat Northern Ireland's Crusaders 9-3 on aggregate in the first round.

"They play good football but they probably haven't been firing on all cylinders recently, even though they have been getting results," Wright said.

"They do give you opportunities. In all the games I've seen, and the games I've seen on DVDs, teams get opportunities against them.

"It's important we stay in the game, remain disciplined and give ourselves a platform, because I do think we'll get chances to score goals."

St Johnstone, in contrast, go into their first competitive game of the season but Wright says their preparation has been sufficient to perform well.

"We have just concentrated on what we can affect and we can get the players as fit as possible in the timeframe that we've got," he added.

ST JOHNSTONE goalkeeper Alan Mannus will go into the clash with Rosenborg knowing from first-hand experience that they are capable of pulling off a surprise win if they battle their way through their first competitive matches of the season.

(...)

"It's difficult these kind of games because Rosenborg are already into their season," he said.

"The thing I found with Shamrock, whenever we went into European games we were halfway through our season so you know what your starting 11 is going to be, you know how you will set up and everyone is comfortable with the way you are playing and you are in your rhythm.

"It makes it a bit more difficult when you haven't had a competitive game yet but anything can happen. We are still a good team with good players and hopefully we can do a good job."
