Hello,
I remember that from mid nintees till mid 2000s you took like 10 or 12 consecutive champion titles and made great perfomances in champions league like win in San Siro in 1996 which gave your qualification to 1/4 final.
But after 2006 you managed to take only 2 and did not participate in champions league.
Did your club suffer from financial crisis? What caused decline in recent years?

Thanks in advance.

We lost a genius coach in Nils Arne Eggen (retired) who was there from the start, then we hired the wrong coaches and has done so too many times. Also our players from the Champions League-era got old and didn't cut it anymore, and we never got back to our old quality (except in 2007 when we got into CL and did very well). Too much of our money got wasted on poor players and on a big administration. Now we are back with a coach that is very similar to Nils Arne Eggen (and played under him), has the same philosophy and our players have gotten a big boost since he got hired.

In short: Lost good coach. Hired bad coaches in years after that. Lost good players, bought players that wasn't good enough for Champions League (and Europa League), and cost too much money.

The huge success between 1988 and 2002 was primarily due to the fantastic coach we had, Nils Arne Eggen, and also his assistants, such as Bjørn Hansen.

The team had well defined roles for each player in the system that we played (4-3-3). Some of the best players did not leave the club to go abroad, so we eventually had a core group of very experienced players. Nowadays it is much worse to hold on to good talents, and even more so good players in their 20s who receive much larger salaries in the other leagues. In the 1990s, the CL-participation gave the players a good bonus, so the salary difference was not as huge as it has been in later years.

However, as the club had started to perceive itself as a natural winner in the league and almost took for granted it was a regular CL-participant, to some extent it ignored that the club's success was based on Eggen's coaching. After his retirement the club was impatient and sacked and hired several coaches in the years 2004 to 2008 (and also 2012 and 2014), often giving the assistant of the sacked coach a chance. While the club's success had been based on fantastic coaching, the club almost neglected who should be in charge as coach. Maybe because the club considered it was very experienced and professional, rich, and had such a squad an exceptional coach was not needed?

In addition, the club had gotten used to the huge income from the CL participation. Its administration had increased manyfold, and the club's expansion was somewhat out of control. The club had become dependent on CL-participation, and without it the club had far too high expenses. Both in terms of player salaries and administrative costs. Since our last CL-participation in 2007 the club has spent much more money than it has earned, and it was forced to cut the number of administrative staff and player salaries.

Even worse, many good players were sold to reduce the annual financial losses, without being replaced with high quality players. We even sold some of our best talents before they had fully developed and they could have been sold for a much better price. All in all, the economic administration and sport administration of the club was less than good for many years, and also the director of administration and the director of sports were forced to resign.

Last year one of the old players who is good at coaching the old 4-3-3 system, and who is willing to use Eggen as his mentor, took over, with the former sports director as his new assistant. Another former player took over the role as our new director of sports, and has done very well so far. We did some very good signings this summer, making many fans question where did the money to buy these players come from?

Since last autumn the team has started playing in a way similar to what it became known for in the 1990s. This year a lot of the enthusiasm has returned, both inside the club and among fans, and for the first time in years everyone feels that a new era could be approaching.
