Tierney featured in both games earlier this season which saw Celtic comfortably overcome the Nordic side, but the Hoops full-back admitted he and his team-mates were expecting a greater challenge this time round.

“It’s going to be different to the knockouts,” he said.

“It will be much more open. The way we bounced back from that game was magnificent. We showed character that night and hopefully we don’t do go behind this time, but if we do we know we can come back.

“We know what we’re in for. We’ve played them and did our video analysis as well, I’m sure they have also, so it’ll be a tough game.

“The start of the game will be important for us. We’ll look to get out sharp, press well and hopefully get a few goals.”

Brendan Rodgers was confident that Celtic could get their Europa League campaign off to a winning start, but he added that his team were expecting to face an even stronger Rosenborg side tonight.

“It’s always a challenge and it doesn’t matter how many times you play an opponent,” he warned.

“You’ve seen that up here in the last two years. We can play a team six times a year and every game presents a different challenge.

“We’ve prepared well, they’re a good team and we respect them and their qualities but we want to bring our game and our energy and hopefully start the group with three points.

“They’re a good side and we’ll always look to win our home games to give ourselves every opportunity. We get great support for all our games at home, particularly the European games. Hopefully we can start well tonight, your home games are always very important.”

Verdens Gang ran comments from former Rosenborg winger Mini Jakobsen, who said:

“I can accept that you might try for a 0-0 away to Celtic, but we’ve learned with Rosenborg that they have to create chances themselves. They failed to create anything.”

Rodgers:

‘We were playing against a Rosenborg side who have won nine games and drawn two since we last faced them to they came with a real high level of confidence and they surprised us in the first 15 or 20 minutes by playing a diamond.

‘But once we found the balance to defend against that we started to come into the game and created some chances, particularly down the left side.

‘Without being at the top of our game we kept going and that’s what I asked the players to do after the game last week.

‘We have to find a way of winning when we are not playing as well as we would like and the players did that tonight.’

James Forrest:

We’ve played them five times in a year now and they’ve all been different types of games. Every one of them have been hard, but we’ve always done well. We’ve kept a few clean sheets now in the last number of games so we can build on that and start adding more goals.

“Celtic haven’t won a group game in Europe for a while, so it’s good to wipe away these negative records as well. It’s not something we think about before a game but when you see it afterwards you can be happy that you’ve helped improve the record.”

• Rosenborg's record against Austrian opposition is W3 D1 L4. Their one away win came in their only previous UEFA Europa League group game on Austrian soil – 2-1 at Rapid Wien on matchday one of 2012/13. They also defeated their Viennese opponents at home (3-2), but in their most recent tie against an Austrian club, in the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League play-offs against Austria Wien, they lost both matches 2-1.

• Salzburg are undefeated in 14 European home games, winning ten. Their overall home record in the UEFA Europa League group stage is W14 D3 L5, the last defeat in the Stadion Salzburg coming on matchday three of the 2016/17 campaign – 0-1 against Nice.

It can certainly be claimed that the football could have been better. The matches were mostly closely contested games of attrition in which Rosenborg most often drew the long straw. In the Europa League, every single game was a brutal reminder that it is a long way up to the second-best level, possibly further than ever before. Rosenborg have won the league and are in the cup final, where they meet bottom of the league Strømsgodset on 2 December. Everything points to two out of two titles for them this year, in which case the club will have won the two trophies that it is in reality possible for Rosenborg to win. They will have cleaned up. Yet for all that, their critics are numerous and vocal.

The fact is that winning the league and possibly the cup is not good enough for the supporters or the directors. For any other Norwegian club, doing the double would have made for a fantastic season. But not for Rosenborg. They want more than that, and so they have set the bar for themselves at what may be an unreasonably high level and which they must almost inevitably fail to reach.
